Special Interest Sections
The FCH is proud to sponsor several Special Interest Sections, which focus on various themes: Media, Arts, and Culture, Florida History, Undergraduate Research, and the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL). If your proposal relates to any one of these, please follow normal procedures in submitting your proposal but also make sure to contact the specific Chair of the Special Interest Section (SIS) that relates to your topic. The organizer of the annual meeting may also refer you to one of the Chairs.
Media, Arts, and Culture
Since 2008, the Media, Arts, and Culture SIS has featured a diverse array of panels on the historical intersection between popular culture and technology. Past panels have focused on the history of comics, film, television, and social media. Any scholar interested in presenting a paper on these themes should contact the current Chair, Dr. Thomas Donaldson (Florida SouthWestern State College) at: [email protected].
The FCH also recognizes the enormous contributions of Dr. Julian Chambliss (Michigan State University), a past FCH president and the first Chair of the Media, Arts, and Culture SIS. Over the course of several annual meetings, he has brought together nationally recognized scholars focusing on the history of comics. Among his many projects, Dr. Chambliss has co-edited a collection of essays titled Ages of Heroes, Eras of Men (2013), which examines the historical development of comic superheroes in the United States. For more information and to contact Dr. Chambliss, please visit his website http://www.julianchambliss.com.

Florida History
Oldest Schoolhouse, St Augustine
The FCH welcomes papers on any aspect of world history, but the organization has a long-standing interest in promoting scholarly research on Florida's history. We are proud to note that many of our attendees who have participated in the Florida History SIS have used the annual meeting as a launching point for their research ideas and have published articles in the Florida Historical Quarterly and have published books by the University Press of Florida. For more information on submitting a paper on Florida history, please contact Dr. Sean McMahon (Florida Gateway College) at [email protected].
Undergraduate Research
Students from Jacksonville University, 2023
It is important to the members of the FCH to encourage undergraduate students to present their research. Undergraduates receive practical professional experience in preparation for graduate school and other careers. In recent years, we have received undergraduate papers from a variety of colleges and universities, including Florida Southern College, Jacksonville University, Wesleyan College, University of North Florida, Rollins College, New College of Florida, and Florida Gulf Coast University. The FCH also gives the J. Calvitt Clarke III Award for the best undergraduate research paper presented at the annual meeting. For more information about this Special Interest Section, please contact Dr. David Harvey (New College of Florida) at [email protected].
Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) in History
Interest in how students learn about the past is growing. The FCH encourages collaboration among those who teach history, and the annual meeting provides a venue for teachers and scholars to discuss the challenges facing K-12 education, higher education, and teaching the public at large about the importance of the past. Papers on the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in history are eligible to be published online in the supplemental edition of the FCH Annals. For more information, please contact Patricia Farless (University of Central Florida) at [email protected].
